Serums contain active ingredients and are made up of aqueous substances. They can be used to treat different skin concerns depending on their concentration. These products are also known as hydration and not moisturizers.
Serums are typically applied to the skin after cleansing but before moisturizing. Serums absorb quickly and don’t make your skin feel greasy. Learn the best way to apply serums in your daily skincare routine.
Our Annmarie Skin Care Serums contain aloe and other natural and activated ingredients. They can be challenging to make yourself unless you’re a chemist with all the necessary equipment to create different emulsions in multiple phases.
For the sake of simplicity, let’s call them “oil-based” serums. I’m certain you’ve seen many companies sell a product as serum only to discover that the ingredients are all base oils and a few seed oils. This is an oil which acts as a moisturizing agent. Serums, however, are hydration with aloe vera or an aqueous base. We’ll also cover some DIY facial serum recipes you can make at home.
These DIY face serums are easy to make at home since all the ingredients are available. Oil-based serums will instantly make your skin glow and provide the necessary moisture.
How to Create an Oil-Based Anti-Aging Serum
You can enjoy a skincare journey by making oil-based serums yourself. The DIY oil-based recipes below are easy to make and also fun! Consider different skin conditions when creating a serum to ensure you choose the right ingredients.
- Pick your carrier oil
- Choose an essential oil or a few
- Add vitamin C or E
- Add the ingredients together, and pour into a glass bottle with a dropper.
Choose the right carrier oil according to your skin type.
You can select a carrier oil based on your skin type or preference.
You may find that some carrier oils are special seed oils like pomegranate and tamanu, while others are carrier oils authentic (like grapeseed and jojoba). Original carrier oils, less concentrated than special seed oils, act as “carriers” that deliver other ingredients into your skin.
Carrier oils are usually neutral in color and scent. Carrier oils dilute essential oils so that they can be absorbed into the skin. Essential oils on their own may irritate sensitive skin. Choose organic oils and cold-pressed oils when selecting carrier oils. These oils should not contain any additives or preservatives.
Carrier oils for oily skin
- Grapeseed Oil contains vitamin E and linoleic acids and can nourish the skin and reduce wrinkles. It is lightweight, easily absorbed by the skin, and has a neutral fragrance.
- Argan Oil contains vitamins A and E. This oil can moisturize and reduce temporary redness.
- Sunflower Oil is an excellent skin moisturizer. It gives the skin a brighter, smoother appearance.
- Apricot Kernel Oil contains vitamin E and has a soothing effect on the skin.
Carrier oils for dry skin
- Jojoba Oil is slightly thicker but closely resembles your skin’s natural oils, making it ideal for skin types with drier conditions. It absorbs quickly into the skin and does not clog pores.
- Rosehip Seed Oil contains high levels of vitamins C and A. Vitamin A helps to create even, glowing skin. Both vitamins also help to create a protective layer for the skin that protects it from environmental stressors. Rosehip oil is not a proper carrier oil and can only be used to make base oils.
- Sweet Almond Oil is lightweight and absorbs quickly. It moisturizes skin, protects it from the sun, and provides natural protection.
- Avocado Oil contains many oleic acids, which help moisturize the skin.
- Sweet Almond Oil is easily absorbed because it’s light and a great moisturizer.
Carrier Oils for Aging Skin
- Rosehip Seed Oil contains natural Retinoids, which can rejuvenate skin. It is also an excellent moisturizer.
- Jojoba Oil has moisturizing properties and rejuvenating qualities to reduce the appearance of fine lines.
- Olive Oil moisturizes and protects skin from environmental stressors. There are better oils for oily skin because it is heavy.
- Avocado Oil is rich in vitamins A, D, and E. These vitamins promote healthy skin and improve the appearance of your skin.
- Argan Oil Improves skin hydration.
