The teenage years can be difficult ones especially if you have problem skin! When I was a teen I had a moderate case of acne. Many visits to the Dermatologists, antibiotics, topical creams , even ultravoilet rays, you name it I had it! I felt like putting a bag over my head most of the time. Now that was quite a few years ago and treatment for acne has improved. However some things never change. Here are some tips you can give your teens.
1. Wash your face with a mild cleanser two times a day.If you have acne avoid scrubbing!
2. Drink 8 glasses of water a day.
3. KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF YOUR FACE- NO PICKING(picking can cause scarring.)
4. Avoid junk food as much as you can, so that means you have to make sure you get proper nutrition
What causes acne?
For teenagers hormones are going crazy and that of course can affect the skin. The skin produces more sebum and as a result blocks the pores then here comes the blemishes usually appearing on the face , neck, and upper back.
It seems that acne-prone skin just comes with the territory for teenagers. Since most teenagers’ hormones become a chaotic mess during puberty, many bodily functions are sent into overproduction mode. For example, the skin produces far more sebum (an oily substance excreted from the glands) than is necessary. As a result the skin’s pores get blocked with sebum and pimples appear on the face, neck and upper back.
For more extreme cases of acne a powerful drug may be prescribed by a Dermatologists called “ACUTANE”. I have known several people who have had great success using this medication, however it can be hard on the liver and blood tests have to be done to monitor the liver when on this drug. Not everyone would be a candidate for this treatment. Sometimes you Doctor will put the teens on antibiotics , most often Tetracycline. One of side effects of Tetracycline is that it can stain your teeth that cannot be fixed later with teeth whiteners, I know this from experience.
Pro-Active skin care has also had some good results!
You do not have to spend a lot of skin care. There are a lot of good products out there for all skin types, one of the best things you can do is do some research and find a Beauty Consultant that is well trained and knows her products well.
