Afrochella sets the bar high for beauty looks in 2023

Escaping from the harsh winter weather is something that everyone wants to do every year. This holiday season was no exception. Many thousands of tourists from all over the globe finally had the chance to enjoy the sun’s warmth at Afrochella Festival in Accra (Ghana), arguably the largest music and culture event on the African continent. The beautiful moments of this year’s edition were a great example of creativity under the theme “Afrofuturism” – with stunning displays of makeup, manicures, and hair highlights. This will be the foundation for 2023.

Patrons could create their runway moments at El-Wak Stadium over two days. They could choose from shimmery, whimsical styles that sparkled on sun-kissed skin or metallic face embellishments and stunning Afrocentric hairstyles.

It isn’t easy to choose a favorite when it comes down to looks. But Afrochella’s real winner was beautiful, hydrated skin. Festival organizers made sure that everyone had the chance to get a touch-up from top global beauty brands like Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty or skincare giant Topicals throughout the day. This allowed patrons to keep their glow going well into the night’s live performances.

Afrochella has something for everyone, so if this is the sign you need to get organized for next year, visit Ghana in Detty December.

We saw some fantastic metallic accents at this year’s Afrofuturism-themed celebrations. There is no such thing as being too extravagant in the jewelry department. Crystal Ivy London, a Trinidadian-born stylist, believes that the trend seen at Afrochella 2022 will soon be reflected in 2023 Fashion Week installations. These metallic accessories are beautiful to look at and hold significant cultural conversations. People are interested in the stories behind these bold beauty looks more than ever,” she said.

Afrochellans have remained true to tradition since the inception of the festival. This year, these makeup looks were back in full force. White face paint is made from clay taken from flowers and plants. It symbolizes purity, hope, and light. Face painting artists will transform faces throughout the festival’s two-day duration. This is where African traditions are celebrated and shared with the community. It is the embodiment of Afrochella.

Who doesn’t love a good sparkle? Afrochella was all about Rhinestones this year. Both men and women could shine from morning to night with these gems. Owusu believes the key to making your glitter and gems last all day is applying them. She said you should invest in a primer and a strong adhesive that can withstand heat.
